Ruth: Severe, imminent outbreaks of irritability combined with dense fog.

Allen: Rough at first, becoming smooth or moderate later with rain.

Adam: Moderate at first, becoming rough, then very rough.

Richard: Messy, getting worse with little chance of improvement.

Geoff: Strong at first, going stronger, moving rapidly, becoming warm.

Tom: Strong at first becoming weaker, moderate hopefully good with foggy patches.

Gav: Cyclonic 6 to gale 8, becoming high later.

Oars set steady, blades kiss the tide,
A crew of many, rowing as one stride.
From quiet waters to ocean’s test,
They chase the rhythm, give their best.

Across to Scilly where wild swells roam,
Far from the shores they call their home,
In salt and sun, in wind and spray,
They carve their course through racing day.

Names bound together in each long pull,
Hearts in sync, resolve made full.
For more than glory, more than the win,
It’s the strength of the crew that carries them in.

By the Isles of Scilly, beneath a salt-bright sun.

Simon and Tom with steady hands,
Tony and Adam at the oar’s demands,
Dwane and Gav with a restless cheer,
And Geoff who leans in without a fear.
While Allen, the Cox, calls sharp and true,
Guiding the boat as the gray swells grew.

Three among them new to this stage,
First taste of the world’s wide rowing page,
Two still fresh from a single year,
Yet pulling like veterans, bold and clear.

The oars all rise, the oars all fall,
One rhythm binding the strength of all.
Not just a race, nor a test alone,
But a story of grit in the saltwind thrown.

Blisters on hands, and worse on our arses,
Jeffers at stroke giving masterful classes.

Simon at five with defiant Geordie flair,

He rows just fine… but protects that gold (hair), behold.

David in three, Devon’s pride in the stream,
Pulling like there’s jam on top of the cream.

Phil in two, the Duracell drive,
Relentless, unstoppable, keeping us alive.

Mark at one, out front on his own,
Calling it clean, “Don’t row like a…” (you’ve grown).

Then there’s our lord and master astern,
Passenger life? No, he makes us all burn.
Every last ounce with words that provoke,
Dave keeps us sharp, the Torridge GOAT at the yoke.

Now Scillies awaits, the test and the roar,
For all that we’ve trained, and all that we’re for.
The swell will rise, old scores to be paid,
In wild, restless waters where legends are made.

Friday, oh Friday, we leave it in the boat,
Oars lifting high, pride caught in our throat.
For Torridge we row, through the crash and the foam,
Six hearts, one crew… and we bring it home.

Ladies Vets WPGC Crew! And their accompanying poem 💙 🌊

From the banks of the Torridge we pulled through it all,
eight months on the water from autumn through squall.

Through sunshine and headwinds, through cold driving rain,
we showed up, we rowed on, we did it again.

No fair-weather rowers — we've earned every stroke,
through flat calm and chop and the chill when we woke.

Each session a little bit faster and stronger,
whatever the weather we just kept on longer.

We're not chasing silver, we won't hunt the cup,
just halfway through the fleet with our chins lifted up.

But don't be mistaken, we'll give all we've got —
eight months in the making, we're firing the shot.

Scillies, we're coming. Blades in. It's time.

Ladies Vets. Torridge. We're ready.💪

It's 2 weeks to go until the World Pilot Gig Champ

It's 2 weeks to go until the World Pilot Gig Championships (WPGC), but who are our crews? We will share over the next couple weeks, kick starting with our Ladies A and a little poem that describes their journey!

Before the dawn on the estuary wide
The Torridge Ladies A take the tide
Blades drop clean, the cox calls time
Six row as one in rhythm and rhyme

At Three Rivers Race they proved their pace
In crowded waters they held their place
And at the World Pilot Gig Championships they came alive
Twenty-fifth in the world, twenty-five

Called “Boscastle” in the final cry, no slight, just a mix-up passing by
But Torridge knew, and so did the sea
Exactly who they were meant to be

Now back they go where the granite shores
Meet rolling swell and Atlantic roars
With steadier hearts and a sharper line
To better that mark of twenty-five

Yesterday we had four Torridge crews take on the b

Yesterday we had four Torridge crews take on the brilliant Three Rivers Race.The Ladies set off in beautiful sunshine, calm waters and perfect rowing conditions… naturally meaning that as soon as the men pushed off the heavens opened 🌧️ With heavy rain and even a bit of hail thrown in for good measure! But true to gig rower fashion, everyone persevered and powered through.

Results:
• Endurance Combined: 36th / 85 – 1:44:38
• Kerens Combined: 66th / 85 – 1:50:29

Tomorrow we’re heading to Saltash for the epic T

Tomorrow we’re heading to Saltash for the epic Three Rivers Race with 4 crews racing. It kicks off with the Ladies race at 12pm, a 10km course with all turns on bow side!
It’s going to be a big one with 95 Ladies crews and 90 Mens crews competing!

In loving memory of John Dingle On Saturday 29th

In loving memory of John Dingle

On Saturday 29th November, four Torridge boats took to the water for a special Spirit of Torridge row in memory of John — a much-loved former Torridge rower and devoted husband to Patricia.

The river was calm, the company heartfelt, and every stroke carried with it our gratitude for the time John shared with this club. His spirit, his smile, and his love for the water will always remain part of Torridge.

Our thoughts and love are with Patricia and all who knew him.

🌊 Torridge Pilot Gig Club – Juniors Wanted! 🚣‍♀️🚣‍♂️

We’re really excited to share that we’re now in a position to welcome Junior rowers (ages 12–16) into our growing squad.

This Saturday was our second dedicated junior training session. It honestly warmed our hearts to see young rowers back in our boats — it feels like the start of something special. 💙

If you know any young people who might love learning to row, making friends, and being part of a supportive team on our beautiful river, please do send them our way.

We’d love to keep growing the junior squad. Feel free to message the page for more details or to book a space.

We are also still welcoming members above the age of 16 however please bear with us if we cant get you on the water as quick as we have had so much interest over the summer with people still going through trial rows now. See you on the water! 🌅💛🚣‍♂️💙
