What is the difference between plastic and wooden gigs?

The main difference between the two types of boats are as follows:

Wooden gigs:

  • Used for racing and race training.
  • Based on a traditional design which is controlled by the Cornish Pilot Gig Association (CPGA), our governing body.
  • More expensive to purchase and maintain than plastic boats. They must be treated with care!

Plastic (GRP) gigs:

  • Used for training and for novice rowing.
  • Not usually used for racing but winter regattas are often organised for plastic boats.
